Marin Real Estate - Interior Design Tips
You have recently purchased a home or condo in Marin and now you are thinking you may be in need
of some interior design. In some cases, if you are planning on just adding a new couch or new curtains, you may be able to handle those duties yourself, but
if you are planning on changes to the structure of the home, or lighting changes, you may want to hire a professional. Interior
designers can assist with ideas for designs, as well as, bringing a room together and giving it the warmth and depth you
are looking for. This week, I am going to share a few tips for those looking to hire an interior designer.
First off, start getting organized. Determine what your budget is and stick with it. Also, look at what you
are wanting to achieve, the space that will be used and what it is going to be used for. Don't forget to decide on
the length of time the project should take.
Be decisive and patient. As with buying a home, or a car, do not let anyone talk you into doing something you are not completely
sure of.
Next, be upfront about what you are looking to do. If there is another home that you adore, find out all the details
from the homeowner. Find out as much as you can about the designer, costs and what their
experience was like. This, in turn, should give you a good idea of what the experience might be like for you.
Always make sure to find out the cost of the project before agreeing to anything. As you can imagine, hiring an
interior designer can sometimes be costly, so make sure there are no hidden surprises.
When you begin the process of choosing the right designer, try interviewing them over the phone first
and then, if you are still interested, ask them over for a final interview and allow them to see the
space you are looking to change. Anyone who comes over should have samples of their work to
show you; go with someone else if they do not.
Lastly, whatever you do, make sure everything is in writing. Estimates, layout designs and all other details should be
signed by you and the designer.
