Oakville is a census-designated place in Napa County. Life began here in the 1860s as a water stop for the steam train owned by The Napa Valley Railroad Company. It earned its name from the dense groves of dark green valley oaks of the area.
Wine production is the primary form of commerce in Oakville and was formally declared a Napa appellation in 1993. Some of the most famous and respected wineries reside in Oakville, such as Robert Mondavi, Opus One, and Screaming Eagle.
